Our Mission

The mission of Team Sam the Lion is to provide information and resources to those facing a DIPG/DMG diagnosis, to advocate on behalf of the DIPG/DMG community and to support and fund the medical professionals and researchers striving to find more effective treatments and ultimately a cure for DIPG/DMG.

We’ve made this oath to Sam and we are determined.

During the twelve years since Sam has passed away, Team Sam the Lion has participated in over thirty walks to increase awareness of DIPG and brain tumors and to raise funds for research.

Sandy and Richard Perkins were featured in the National Brain Tumor Society’s 2016 Annual Report as advocates for the brain tumor community. Team Sam the lion received the NBTS Choosing Hope Visionary Award in 2019. The Student’s Supporting Brain Tumor Research (SSBTR) recognized Team Sam the Lion with an award in 2022 for their many years of support.

Team Sam the Lion is part of a DIPG/DMG Research Funding Alliance (DDRFA). This alliance is made up of 60+ private foundations and families uniting to combine resources to fund promising DIPG/DMG research. During its first year, DDRFA has awarded $1.6 million in grants.

Each grant application submitted to DDRFA is reviewed by a Medical Advisory Council made up of the leading DIPG/DMG researchers in the country. The alliance members rely upon the Council’s expertise in selecting the most promising projects to be funded.

Visit the DDRFA web site here to learn more about the alliance and the credentials of the Medical Advisory Council.
